Also known as chocolate eggers this breed was developed in France in the mid 1800's in the town for which it bears it's name, Maran. They quickly became very popular for their very dark brown eggs. The CUCKOO variety of Maran resembles the Barred Rock in color. Marans lay the darkest eggs of any other breed. The males reach a weight of 7 lbs. at maturity and the females are 6 lbs.
